Welcome

The Advisory Board on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse (ABADA) and Alaska Mental Health Board (AMHB) are exploring new ways to be make it easier for people all over Alaska to share their perspectives with us.

Comments to this blog will be one more way that Alaskans concerned about issues related to mental health and substance abuse can “speak their minds.”  We’ll be asking about issues ranging from public funding for services to public policy.  But first, we’ll post some information on how our budget recommendation process works.

We’ll also be posting some “ground rules” to insure that comments are constructive.

Our hope is that this blog will be a way for more people to contribute to the public process and keep ABADA and AMHB informed about the issues affecting people right now.  Click on the Posts tab above and see what’s being discussed right now.

There exist an abundance of groups working and talking about suicide and suicide prevention but I still dont see anyone going to the rural areas and talking frankly with kids in the schools about
    1) the finality of making a “suicide” choice
    2) the devastation that families and communities go through, and
    3) the loss of spirituality within families, communities and cultures

I am starting a foundation in memory of my son and have started dialog with the Lower Kuskokwim School District about presenting a program directly in the schools. The idea in principal has been accepted. I would appreciate any comments, suggestions or offers of help.
